TheFifth Sessionof ColloquiumSeries onPolicy and Realitiesby CASS Members was held at Liangxiang Campus (R140, Administration Building) on the afternoon of June 14th, 2019. Chaired by Prof. Wang Xinqing, Vice President of UCASS, the talk was delivered by Prof. Jin Bei, a member and research fellow of CASS. As former director of theInstitute of Industrial Economicsand Ph.D. supervisor of UCASS, Prof. Jin also serves as President of the China Association for Regional Economics (CARE) and President of China Business Journal. Jointlyorganized by the General Office of Academic Divisions of CASS and UCASS, the event had an attendance of 800-plus faculty members and students, all drawn to Prof. Jin’s lecture onChanging Times: Innovation-driven Revitalization.
As one of the greatest miracles in human history, industrialization also constitutes a disruptive revolution, ushering in a new chapter of mankind. Alongside its constant evolution, the whole world including China is now faced with profound changes unseen in a century. Prof. Jin looked into the 100-year trajectory of China's economic development and revitalization of its real economy, so as to better understand how China seeks to cope with the unprecedented times with innovation-driven solutions.
Starting with a revisit of the economic modernization in the past century, Prof. Jin first compared the different rules of operation for planned economy and market economy. He then identified the progressive nature of China’s reform and opening up, highlighting the important role of CPC throughout the reform process. By comparing the GDP per capita of China and the rest of the world from 1980 to 2017, Prof. Jin further indicated the substantial economic contribution of China as a force for change to the world’s economic landscape, demonstrating the unprecedented changes faced by China and the rest of the world. In his talk, Prof. Jin also probed into technological pathways, scientific and technological innovation, intellectual property rights and other aspects of the real economy. He concluded the event with an interactive session with students, touching upon questions around Schumpeter’s theory of innovation, the middle-income trap and CSR for entrepreneurs.
